The problem solving process

The problem solving process involves the following 7 steps

  1. Understanding the problem
  2. Defining the problem
  3. Brainstorming
  4. Making a plan
  5. Carrying out the plan
  6. Reporting back
  7. Reflecting on your solution

You will be asked to solve the problems using the above steps.


Steps 1-4 will happen online at home.

Steps 5 and 6 will happen in class.
Step 7 will be assigned time during class and will be emailed to teacher from home. 

Problem solving timeline

Day 1: introduction to problem solving process
At home, research part 1 online. Try to follow steps 1 and 2. 
Step 3 should happen online using Edmodo. Brainstorm in your groups to come up with ideas based on your online research.
Follow step 4, make a plan, online at home, in your groups. 

Day 2: Carry out the plan
Work together in class to solve part 1 of the problem. (Notes: You will not have computer access in class; you must organise any materials or equipment you need before you come to class). 

Day 3 and 4: repeat steps 1-5 for parts 2, 3 and 4. 
Research possible solution methods at home. 
Discuss with your group and make a plan. 
Carry out the plan in class

Days 5: step 7: report back: 
Prepare a presentation to report back on your method of solution with your group. Include the elements as detailed in the marking rubric. 

Days 6 and 7: reporting back
Presentations of solutions from each group. 

Day 8: reflections
Class 8 can be used to reflect on your solution. 
Include the elements detailed in the marking rubric. 
Reflections must be sent to Ms. Gaffney before 19/03/2014
